Microcurrent
The Quiet Power of Professional Microcurrent
Microcurrent has been used in professional facial treatments for decades, and it remains one of our favourite ways to work with the face because it does something quite unique: it works with the skin, muscles and underlying physiology without creating inflammation or injury.
Using extremely low levels of electrical current, professional microcurrent gently stimulates the tissues of the face. The treatment itself can feel incredibly subtle — often deeply relaxing — but there is a lot happening beneath the surface.
Rather than simply treating the skin from the outside, microcurrent allows us to work with the face on several levels at once.
Working with the muscles + architecture of the face
There are dozens of muscles in the face, and they don't all need the same thing.
Some areas may benefit from greater tone and stimulation, while others become shortened or hold chronic tension through expression, stress, jaw clenching and repetitive movement.
Professional microcurrent allows us to work with these muscles individually. Using precise probe placement, we can stimulate and tone where needed while lengthening and releasing areas that are holding tension.
This is where the artistry of the treatment comes in. We aren't simply trying to tighten everything. We're looking at the structure, movement and balance of each individual face and working with its natural architecture.
The result can be a face that appears more lifted, open, rested and defined — while still looking completely like you.
What microcurrent does for the skin
Although microcurrent is often associated with facial lifting, the benefits aren't limited to the muscles.
Microcurrent supports circulation within the tissues, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the skin and helping support fluid movement. This is why the skin can look noticeably brighter and more alive immediately after a treatment, while puffiness can appear reduced and facial contours more defined.
And unlike treatments that rely on exfoliation, heat or controlled injury to create change, microcurrent leaves the surface of the skin intact.
There is no peeling and no recovery period. It's a modality that can support the appearance and function of the skin without asking it to first recover from damage.
What happens at a cellular level?
Our bodies are electrical by nature. Cells maintain tiny electrical gradients that are involved in communication, energy production and normal cellular function.
Microcurrent works in the microamp range — extremely small amounts of electrical current that can be so subtle you may barely feel them.
Research into microcurrent has shown that certain levels of electrical stimulation can influence cellular processes, including the production of ATP — the energy cells use to carry out their normal functions.
This cellular aspect is part of what makes microcurrent so interesting. The goal isn't to overwhelm the tissue with a stronger stimulus. It's to provide a very small, targeted electrical stimulus that works with processes already happening within the body.
Why does professional microcurrent feel so gentle?
This is often surprising the first time you experience it.
A professional microcurrent treatment shouldn't need to feel intense to be effective. You may feel a faint tingling or pulsing in certain areas, but much of the treatment can feel incredibly gentle and relaxing.
And that's intentional.
Microcurrent uses very low levels of current. We're then using our probes to precisely work with individual muscles rather than relying on intensity to do the work.
It's a lovely example of something we believe strongly in: more stimulation isn't always better stimulation.
Why isn't my face visibly moving?
If you've seen facial devices online that make the face visibly twitch or contract, you may wonder why this isn't happening during your professional microcurrent treatment.
Those pronounced contractions are typically associated with EMS (electrical muscle stimulation). EMS stimulates the motor nerves strongly enough to create repetitive muscular contractions. Microcurrent works differently and generally uses much lower levels of current.
With professional microcurrent, visible contraction isn't the goal.
Instead, we use precise probe placement to work with individual facial muscles — stimulating and toning where appropriate while also lengthening and releasing muscles that are shortened or holding tension.
Not every muscle benefits from simply being contracted.
This is also where professional treatment differs from using a device broadly across the face at home. We can see and feel what's happening within your individual face and continually adjust our placement, direction and technique.
So although professional microcurrent may look and feel much quieter, the treatment is highly specific, customized and intentional.
The beauty of doing less
Perhaps what we love most about microcurrent is that it challenges the idea that effective skincare needs to be aggressive.
We're not removing layers of skin. We're not creating inflammation. We're not heating the tissue or asking it to heal from an injury.
We're working with muscle tone, tension, circulation, fluid movement and cellular activity while respecting the integrity of the skin.
