Microneedling
Microneedling is a collagen-induction treatment that creates tiny, controlled channels in the skin to activate its natural healing response.
At Skin Frequency Studio, microneedling can be used to support:
-
Fine lines and loss of firmness
-
Uneven skin texture
-
Acne scarring
-
Post-inflammatory pigmentation
-
Sun-related pigmentation
-
Enlarged-looking pores
-
Congestion and blackheads
-
Overall skin tone, texture and resilience
How Microneedling Works
Microneedling creates thousands of very small, controlled microchannels in the skin.
Those microchannels signal the skin to begin a healing process that includes inflammation, repair, collagen production and gradual strengthening of the tissue.
Over time, this can improve texture, firmness, scarring, pigmentation and overall skin quality.
Deeper Is Not Better
Microneedling depth is adjusted based on the area being treated, the concern we are working on and the condition of the skin.
Some areas may only need a very shallow treatment, while deeper scarring or more significant textural changes may require more depth.
The goal is not to create as much trauma as possible. It is to create enough stimulation to trigger healing and collagen production while still allowing the skin to recover well.
Skin Barrier and Treatment Planning
Before microneedling, I look closely at the condition of the skin barrier and how the skin is functioning overall.
If the skin is very sensitized, compromised or reactive, it may need some support before beginning microneedling.
At Skin Frequency Studio, treatment planning begins with a consultation and OBSERV® skin analysis. This gives us a more detailed look at pigmentation, redness, congestion, texture and other changes in the skin before deciding how microneedling should be used.
The treatment is then adjusted to the individual rather than performed as a standard protocol.
The Treatment
A professional microneedling device is used to create rapid, controlled microchannels across the skin.
The needle depth can be changed throughout the treatment depending on the area and concern being treated.
Because the device works at a very high speed and the treatment depth is carefully controlled, numbing cream may not be needed for every client.
Freshly prepared hyaluronic acid is used during the treatment.
Why Redness and Inflammation Are Part of the Process
After microneedling, the skin will usually look pink or red and may feel warm, tight or mildly sensitive.
This is an expected part of the treatment.
Microneedling works by creating a controlled inflammatory response in the skin. That response is what signals the healing cascade to begin and helps trigger the processes involved in repair, collagen production and skin renewal.
Because of this, the goal after treatment is not to immediately shut that inflammation down.
Post-treatment care is intentionally minimal. We avoid unnecessary cooling treatments, aggressive products or anything that may interfere with the skin moving through its normal healing process.
The redness and warmth gradually settle as the skin moves into the next stage of repair.
Microneedling for Pigmentation
Microneedling can help improve the appearance of post-inflammatory pigmentation and some forms of sun-related pigmentation.
As the skin renews and repairs itself over time, areas of uneven pigmentation can gradually become less noticeable.
Melasma requires more consideration because it can be affected by inflammation, heat, hormones and UV exposure. Treatment depth, timing, home care and sun protection are especially important for skin that is prone to melasma.
Microneedling for Acne-Prone and Congested Skin
Microneedling can also be useful for acne-prone and congested skin.
Over a series of treatments, it may help improve the appearance of:
-
Excess oiliness
-
Clogged pores
-
Blackheads
-
Congestion
-
Enlarged-looking pores
-
Uneven texture
-
Marks left behind from breakouts
-
Acne scarring
It can also help the skin look more even and regulated over time, while addressing some of the longer-term changes left behind by previous breakouts.
Treatment is always adjusted based on what is happening in the skin at the time and whether the main concern is congestion, active breakouts, pigmentation or scarring.
How Many Treatments Are Recommended?
Microneedling is usually most effective as a series rather than a single treatment.
For most concerns, I recommend three to six treatments spaced approximately six weeks apart.
That spacing gives the skin enough time to move through the different stages of healing and collagen production before the next treatment.
Each treatment builds on the last. The skin continues repairing and strengthening between appointments, so results develop gradually rather than all at once.
When Will You See Results?
Microneedling results continue to develop over time.
Week One
Once the initial redness has settled, the skin often looks brighter and feels smoother.
You may notice:
-
More luminosity
-
Smoother texture
-
A fresher appearance
-
Temporary plumping
Around Week Four
Collagen production and repair are underway.
At this stage, changes in texture, pore appearance, pigmentation and overall skin quality may start to become more noticeable.
Around Three Months
The deeper changes become easier to see.
Skin may appear:
-
Firmer
-
Smoother
-
More even in tone and texture
-
Less visibly affected by scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation
Around One Year
The changes created through microneedling continue long after the treatment itself.
Collagen takes time to form, strengthen and mature, which is why results continue to build over many months.
When microneedling is done as a series, each treatment creates another period of repair and collagen production, allowing the benefits to build gradually over time.
Preparing for Microneedling
In the weeks surrounding treatment, the goal is to keep the skin as calm and stable as possible.
Before treatment:
-
Avoid strong exfoliating acids, retinoids and irritating active products as directed
-
Avoid waxing the treatment area for approximately two weeks
-
Limit excessive sun exposure
-
Avoid treatment if the skin is sunburned or significantly sensitized
-
Let me know about medications, recent procedures, active infections, cold sores, pregnancy or health changes that may affect healing
Specific preparation instructions will be provided during your consultation.
Post-Treatment Care
For approximately the first 24 hours, the skin should be left as undisturbed as possible unless specific aftercare instructions have been provided.
For the following several days:
-
Avoid excessive heat, saunas and strenuous exercise while the skin is still reactive
-
Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure
-
Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids and other strong active products
-
Keep skincare minimal and supportive
-
Avoid picking, rubbing or repeatedly touching the skin
Post-treatment care may vary slightly depending on your skin and the depth of treatment.
Microneedling at Skin Frequency Studio
Microneedling is recommended based on your skin, your goals and whether the treatment is appropriate for you at that time.
For some clients, the first step may be supporting the skin barrier, improving congestion or preparing the skin before beginning a series.
Consultation, OBSERV® skin analysis and treatment planning help determine how microneedling should be used, how frequently it should be performed and where it fits into the bigger picture of your skin.
The goal is to create the right amount of stimulation, give the skin enough time to heal and allow the results to build naturally over time.
